Business Leaders Call CPEC Phase II Green Opportunity

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s Businessmen Panel (BMP) has urged the government to use the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a launchpad for green industrialisation, stressing that sustainable production is essential for long-term economic growth and export competitiveness.

BMP Chairman Mian Anjum Nisar said Pakistan must integrate renewable energy, low-carbon technologies, and eco-friendly manufacturing into upcoming CPEC projects. He argued that rising fuel, electricity, and raw material costs are strangling industries and inflating consumer prices, making a green shift an “economic necessity rather than an environmental choice.”

He noted that while Phase I of CPEC focused on infrastructure and power projects, Phase II offers a chance to build a sustainable industrial base with green Special Economic Zones, waste management, and energy-efficient technologies. Such initiatives, he said, would help Pakistan meet strict global environmental standards, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and lower the cost of doing business.

Nisar urged the government to provide tax incentives, subsidised green finance, and regulatory support to encourage private-sector participation. He highlighted the potential for dedicated green industrial parks under CPEC to attract foreign direct investment, technology transfer, and boost value-added exports.

The BMP leader also called for the integration of green finance tools such as bonds and concessional funding, alongside better coordination among ministries to align trade, energy, and environmental policies. He stressed that Pakistan could position itself as a hub for clean technology manufacturing, renewable energy equipment, and low-carbon goods while creating thousands of jobs for youth in sustainable industries.

“Economic policy can no longer be separated from climate policy,” Nisar concluded, emphasising that CPEC Phase II provides Pakistan with a strategic opportunity to reshape its industrial future and strengthen resilience against global shocks.
