As students across the Chicago-area gear up for Homecoming season, the Better Business Bureau is warning of shady businesses and scammers eager to exploit the moment.
From fake websites advertising dresses and accessories to limo services that disappear after payment, the BBB says they’ve seen a rise in deceptive practices targeting teens and their families celebrating the high school milestone.
“Homecoming should be a time of celebration, not regret,” says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the BBB. “Unfortunately, the rush to find the perfect outfit, book a limousine, or snag last-minute deals can lead to costly mistakes. Scammers know this—and they’re counting on it.”
Top scam risks during Homecoming season
BBB warns some limousine companies promise luxury transportation and instead deliver subpar service or fail to show up all together.
“Always verify credentials, read reviews, and confirm details in writing,” the BBB advises.
Social media ads could also lead to websites offering dresses at low prices, which are commonly fraudulent.
“If it looks too good to be true, it probably is,” BBB says.
Lastly, be weary of pop-up vendors as they may sell low-quality or knockoff items with no return policy. BBB advises people to shop with trusted retailers and check BBB ratings.
What to know if you’re renting clothing
For those planning to rent clothing for the evening, the BBB says to keep a few things in mind.
Check that the clothes are in good condition, paying close attention to signs of damage or wear and tear.
“You don’t want to be charged for damage caused by the previous renter,” BBB says.
Use the size chats and measurement tables to ensure your rented items fit well, BBB advises.
Lastly, pay close attention to the return policy before renting. Some companies charge additional feeds for late returns or damage, so read the fine print to be aware of what you’re signing up for.
What to know if you’re renting a limousine
If you’re renting a limousine, visit the BBB website to check out the business’ profile and reviews people may have posted, the BBB advises.
Look for overage charges and details on pick-up and drop-off times in the contract fine print. Other things to pay attention to in the fine print are details related to or impacting itinerary, car make and model and number of travelers.
The BBB also advises to get a copy of the contract and receipts for all payments. If a deposit is required, determine how much it will be and whether a refund is available if you need to cancel. The BBB also suggests getting all refund and cancellation policies in writing.
Bernas says, “Taking these steps in advance will help maximize the Homecoming celebration.”
