Strictly Come Dancing pro admits she’s ‘disappointed’ after shock at being benched

Nancy Xu has given fans an update after reports she was ‘upset’ after not landing a partner on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The series has already seen two stars — Dani Dyer and Kristian Nairn — forced to pull out, with dancer Dianne Buswell’s pregnancy also sparking questions.

While Dianne and the 14 other professionals swirl around the ballroom with their celebrity partners in hopes of securing the Glitterball, Nancy has been left on the bench.

According to The Sun, the 34-year-old dancer felt there was a ‘deeper issue’ she was unaware of, which was causing the showrunners to ‘snub’ her.

However, Nancy has now taken to Instagram to reassure fans that while she is ‘disappointed’, she will be cheering on the couples.

In the video, she posed in various locations looking sad, faking a smile and nodding when her voiceover asked if she was ‘okay’.

Slowly, she became more dishevelled and frantic as the skit went on before reappearing as her usual put-together self to thank her fans for reaching out.

‘Thank you so much for all your kind and supportive messages that I’ve been receiving in the past few days,’ Nancy began. ‘I am ok, as you all know now, I don’t have a dance partner on Strictly Come Dancing this year.’

She explained: ‘In the very beginning when I just received the messages it does upset me and I do feel disappointed, coming from China and arriving in this country, all I wanted is to achieve my dream and strictly has given me such a big platform to allow me to show my skills and to show my talents, so of course this year, I feel, left out.

‘But I’m good, because I’m still part of the show and this year you’ll probably hear my voice more than ever, because I’ll give all my energies to support all my Strictly families.’

Her message comes after an insider told The Sun that she was ‘absolutely incensed by it all’, having performed well last year with Shayne Ward, 40.

The pair had a good run with plenty of nines scored across the eight weeks they remained in the competition.

Nancy was then paired with BBC’s Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey during the Christmas special but they have not been reunited now he is on the main show.

This is fairly standard as it would give the celeb an unfair advantage— having trained with the dancer previously — but she reportedly still expected to be paired up with someone.

She originally joined Strictly in 2019 but it was not until two years later that Nancy was partnered with a celebrity for the main series.

In 2021, she and CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson went all the way to the semi-finals — a feat she repeated the following year with Will Mellor.

Her lucky streak ended in 2023 when she was partnered with Les Dennis, with the pair becoming the first eliminated that year.

Nancy has also appeared in Christmas specials, dancing with Jamie Borthwick in 2023 and then with Harry last year.

Watch the next episode of Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One on September 27.
