One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has opened up about the challenges of being a broke single mum at the age 21 and how the experience shaped her life.
The federal senator shared a rare insight into her past as a keynote speaker at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Brisbane on the weekend, where she received a standing ovation when she was introduced to the sell-out crowd.
Years before her first stint in politics in the mid-1990s, Hanson was just 16 when she got married for the first time and had her first child the following year.
She was 21 when her husband walked out on the family, just six months after the birth of their second child.
‘I didn’t have enough money to feed us but I made sure the kids were looked after,’ Hanson told the crowd.
‘I had a part-time job to try and pay the bills. I had no assistance, no help, nothing, not a cent.’
‘He just completely distanced himself from myself and the kids.’
Hanson worked in various jobs to support her young family and later helped her second husband run his plumbing business.
‘I was up there doing the guttering, doing blockages, going to neighbours’ places rewashing taps.
‘It came from my work ethic.’
The third youngest of seven children, Hanson’s work ethic was instilled by watching her father Jack Seccombe work 106 hours a week for 25 years.
‘It’s taught me resilience to stand on my own two feet,’ she told the crowd.
‘No one owes you anything.
‘The world owes you nothing, and I’m sick and tired of seeing people out there play the victim.’
Elsewhere in her speech, Hanson revealed a movie-length film of her popular ‘Please Explain’ cartoon series will hit cinemas on January 26 to coincide with Australia Day.
‘People are saying, ‘Pauline – where are your cartoons? We want to see your cartoons,” Hanson said.
‘Well, the big surprise is, we’re actually putting out the movie.
‘Hopefully it goes worldwide – so wait for that one. I’m very proud of it.
