Mister Mushroom is an NPC in Hollow Knight: Silksong that helps unlock the game’s most elusive ending, but only when you talk to the character several times. This mysterious figure sprouts up only in Silksong’s hidden story section, making them difficult to find if you don’t know where to look.
Before you can speak to Mister Mushroom, you have to unlock Act 3 of the game’s story first. The only way to get to Act 3 in Silksong is to complete every side quest Wish in Act 2, then finish the “Silk and Soul” mission that allows you to obtain the Needolin item. By using this tool on Grand Mother Silk, you can unveil the third chapter to Hornet’s tale.
Who Is Mister Mushroom In Hollow Knight: Silksong?
Discover A Hidden Quest Giver Where You Least Expect
Mister Mushroom is a character that’s easily missed in Silksong, only appearing to those actively searching for him. This NPC is tied to the “Passing of the Age” extra ending, acting as a conduit to get one of the rarest conclusions to your adventure.
To encounter Mister Mushroom at all, you have to start the “Passing of the Age” Wish, which can be found in the Putrified Ducts area of Act 3. From here, go to the lower right corner of the area, swimming past a river of water until you can climb up to a higher place.
Before you have a chance to encounter Mister Mushroom at all, you need to have Hornet’s Silk Soar ability, which is also unlocked in Act 3 as you progress.
At this point, the higher platforms here will let you use Silk Soar to go even further up, leading to an area with blue mushrooms growing everywhere. Head to the shrine to the left and inspect it to start the quest, which gives you a cryptic message.
With the Wish promised, you’ll get a clue alluding to where Mister Mushroom will appear throughout Act 3. Speaking to Mister Mushroom will cause him to disappear and head to another area, where you’ll have to track him down again to keep progressing the quest until it concludes.
Every Mister Mushroom Location
Pluck And Speak To The Fungus In Several Key Spots
When you reach a location where Mister Mushroom is set to be, you need to play Hornet’s Needolin to summon the NPC out of the ground. This allows you to briefly speak to the character, revealing more cryptic messages and hints at where he’ll show up next.
Those trying to reach Silksong’s hidden ending will have to exhaust all of Mister Mushroom’s dialogue to get him to move from one area to another. Mister Mushroom has seven different spots where he can be summoned through the Needolin, but these places are fairly specific, meaning you have to play your instrument in the right place.
Mister Mushroom Location #1 — Moss Grotto
The first area where Mister Mushroom will appear is in the Moss Grotto, right underneath the exit leading to the Ruined Chapel. This spawn point is between two separate benches, and is easy to spot due to the blue mushrooms growing on the ground.
As you explore different areas of Act 3, you can try to look for spots where blue mushrooms grow on the floors of certain rooms. These are the spots where Mister Mushroom will always spawn, but he only appears in these places in a specific order.
Once you start playing the Needolin, Mister Mushroom will slowly rise up from the ground here, speaking to Hornet when you choose to engage with him. Finishing the conversation here will progress the Wish tied to Mister Mushroom, setting him up to appear at his next location.
Mister Mushroom Location #2 — Bone Bottom
Toward the bottom right section of the Bone Bottom area, you might be able to hear the mumbling of Mister Mushroom to reveal his location. The NPC appears on a platform right above the exit leading to The Marrow area from this location.
Similar to the other spots you’ll see, a patch of blue mushrooms on the platform indicates where Hornet needs to play her Needolin. If the mushrooms in this space are quiet, you haven’t gone over Mister Mushroom’s dialogue enough in the previous location, meaning you’ll have to double back and finish that interaction before coming back here.
Mister Mushroom Location #3 – Far Fields
Once again, you can find Mister Mushroom in the bottom right corner of an area, this time close to the bench in Far Fields right before it becomes a dead end. Unlike the other locations, you’ll see some blue mushrooms sprinkled around the floor, indicating that Mister Mushroom’s spawn point is a bit further up.
Climb up to the central platform here to where Mister Mushroom appears. This will be a rocky area filled with mushrooms and thick grass, giving Hornet a wide place to stand while she uses the Needolin to summon the NPC once more.
Mister Mushroom Location #4 — Greymoor
Left of the Halfway Home, you can find Mister Mushroom in Greymoor by climbing up the platforms leading to the upper left exit to the Wisp Thicket. You have to use Hornet’s Double Jump in Silksong and other attacks to bounce off some floating objects to reach this exit, as the hallways host the mysterious fungus.
Mister Mushroom is right in the narrow hallways whose upper exit leads into the Wisp Thicket, in a very small patch of blue mushrooms you will almost certainly miss at first. If you fall back into the large room in Greymoor you had to climb, you’ve gone past where the NPC resides.
Mister Mushroom Location #5 — The Slab
Starting from the lower left bench and fast travel point near the Mount Fay exit, head right to start searching for Mister Mushroom here. Within the following Slab hallway, you’ll have to jump to use Hornet’s natural light to reveal a hidden path in the ceiling of this space.
If you are having trouble navigating The Slab area, Mister Mushroom is located in the second hallway to the right starting from the bottom and counting up from the right corner of this area.
With your Silk Soar ability, you can launch Hornet up into this hidden area, then head right again until you can drop into a larger room. This place is filled with chains protecting a larger bronze chamber, but Mister Mushroom can be summoned onto the small patch of mushrooms to the left of this structure without any need to interact with it.
Mister Mushroom Location #6 – Mount Fay
Despite the cold environment on Mount Fay, you have to ascend to the peak of this location to find where Mister Mushroom appears next. Go back to the place where you originally obtained Hornet’s Double Jump, otherwise known as the upper right corner of this area.
Here, Mister Mushroom does not need to be summoned by the Needolin, as they will already be talking to the massive bird who you already met in this space. Simply speak to Mister Mushroom to see him disappear again, progressing the quest forward.
Mister Mushroom Location #7 — The Cradle
The Cradle is one of the hardest areas to access in the game, requiring you to use Silk Soar to ascend past the Choral Chambers and Cogwork Core areas beforehand. Once you manage to reach this spot, you need to use Silk Soar again to follow the beam of light leading higher into this area.
Go to the very top of The Cradle, then use Silk Soar to find a hidden gap in its ceiling near the top right of the area. The space you travel to will be completely off your map, featuring a chamber you can enter with an extremely difficult platforming challenge you have to overcome.
Every single platforming ability is needed to make it past The Cradle’s platforming section, from Hornet’s Clawline Grappling Hook to her Double Jump and other movement abilities.
The platforming challenge is incredibly long, featuring only a single bench halfway for a bit of respite. Mister Mushroom is at the very end of this platforming section, in a field of blue mushrooms that you can see a beam of light touching.
