A non-profit is working to make sure kids across Southeast Michigan have brand new bikes.
Free Bikes 4 Kidz has been collecting bicycles since 2018 and giving them away to local children in need. The organization is called on the public to donate used bicycles for its annual event this week at various locations across Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties.
Those who wish to make a donation will find volunteers collecting bicycles at various drop-off locations throughout southeast Michigan on September 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The flagship donation site will be at Woodward Corners, Corewell Health shopping center at the southwest corner of 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak.
Donations in Macomb County can be made at Tru Green, 50526 Corporate Drive, in Macomb Township.
Bordine’s at 18353 Rochester Road, Rochester is among several sites in Oakland County along with the Michigan Institute for Human Performance, 2265 Livernois Road in Troy and Brother Rice High School – 7101 Lahser Road in Bloomfield Hills.
A map of locations can also be found here.
All of the donated bikes will be delivered to a warehouse provided by the Piston Group where they will be stored, cleaned and refurbished in time for the holidays.
Volunteers of all skill levels will be needed to help with the cleaning and repairs between Sept. 29-Dec. 4. Just before Christmas all of the bicycles will be given to under-resourced children through pre-registered faith-based and community organizations and schools.
