Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce was fined by the NFL on Saturday for his actions during the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in week two.
Kelce was fined $14,491 for unsportsmanlike conduct, according to NFL football operations. The incident occurred during the third quarter on Sept. 14 when Kelce made a 23-yard catch and celebrated with a gesture towards the Eagles’ sideline.
The three-time Super Bowl champion wasn’t penalized on the field for his actions, but received punishment days later from the NFL league office, which posts rules violations every Saturday at 4 p.m. EST.
All players who are notified of violations may appeal their ruling by scheduling a hearing with the NFL. The player’s appeal is assigned to be heard by one of the league’s appeal officers, former NFL players Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson.
Fines collected from NFL rules violations are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation and the NFL Foundation “to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including football and the communities that support the game,” according to the league’s website.
After his punishment was announced Saturday, Kelce made four receptions for 26 yards to help lead the Chiefs to a 22-9 win over the New York Giants on Sunday night.
“The NFL has made it known they are cracking down on celebrations, and for most teams across the league, including the Browns, players have already seen the effects as more players are issued fines for in-game celebrations,” said Ashley Bastock, Cleveland Browns reporter for cleveland.com / The Plain Dealer.
