New Delhi: Jaishankar, Rubio Meet Amid Strain Over Trump’s 50% Tariff External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, with discussions focusing on trade and H-1B visa issues.This was their third in-person meeting this year, following interactions in Washington in July during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and in January soon after US President Donald Trump was sworn in. It was, however, their first meeting since Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on India over its Russian oil purchases, taking the total levy to 50%.Jaishankar later posted on X: “Good to meet @SecRubio this morning in New York. Our conversation covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern. Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas. We will remain in touch.”The talks came on the same day India and the US launched discussions aimed at concluding a trade agreement.Jaishankar, who arrived in New York on Sunday for the high-level UNGA week, is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings and will deliver India’s national statement at the General Debate on September 27.Live EventsOn Monday, he also met Philippines Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo. “Pleased to meet Secretary of Foreign Affairs @SecLazaro of Philippines at the start of #UNGA80 in New York.
