Oklahoma State fires veteran coach Mike Gundy, reports say

(Gray News) – Oklahoma State has fired its head football coach Mike Gundy, according to reports.
The news comes a day after Gundy told reporters that he planned on staying with the program through the 2025 season and beyond.
This season was the 58-year-old’s 21st season with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, according to Sports Illustrated.
“I’m under contract, here, for I think 3 1/2 years,” he said. “When I was hired here to take this job, ever since that day, I’ve put my heart and soul into this, and I will continue to do that until at some point, if I say I don’t want to do it or if somebody else says we don’t want you to do it.”
Oklahoma State fell to 1-2 after losing to Tula 19-12 on Friday, marking the program’s first home loss to the Golden Hurricanes since 1951.
According to ESPN, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have dropped 11 of their past 12 games dating to the start of the 2024 season, including 11 consecutive losses against FBS opponents.
According to Sports Illustrated, Gundy is the winningest coach in the program’s history, with a 170-90 record.
ESPN reported that, following his departure, Oklahoma State will owe Gundy $15 million.
