New Delhi, Sep 23 (KNN) India’s Tata Advanced Systems has launched the country’s first overseas defence manufacturing plant in Berrechid, Morocco, marking a significant step in India’s global defence expansion.
The facility will produce the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8, developed jointly by Tata Advanced Systems and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The vehicle features advanced systems, including an integrated power pack with automatic transmission, as well as flotation and propulsion capabilities, making it suitable for modern combat requirements.
The new unit, run by a wholly owned subsidiary named TASL Morocco, has the capacity to manufacture up to 100 armoured vehicles annually. The first batch is expected to roll out in around 18 months.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to inaugurate the facility during his September 2025 visit to Morocco, which will be the first visit by an Indian defence minister to the country.
The visit comes at the invitation of Abdeltif Loudiyi, Morocco’s Minister Delegate of National Defence.
This initiative reflects a major shift in India’s defence policy, moving from the “Make in India” framework to a broader “Make for the World” approach.
It highlights India’s ambition to establish a global footprint in defence manufacturing while strengthening international partnerships.
The development also underlines the growing role of Indian companies in supplying high-technology military platforms not only for domestic use but also for the international market.
