Battlefield 6’s Battle Royale Mode Will Have the Same Destruction as the Core Game

While not too many details about the battle royale mode in Battlefield 6 have been revealed even as the mode has begun playtests through Battlefield Labs, lead producer David Sirland has confirmed on social media platform X that it will feature the same systems of environmental destruction as the core multiplayer modes.

Responding to a post asking whether the battle royale mode will allow players to completely destroy buildings, Sirland said that there will still be rubble left in the aftermath. He also noted that the amount of rubble will depend on the kind of building that was destroyed, and what materials it was made of. Rather, the game’s focus will be on remaining readable while still being fun to play.

“Same systems, still leave designed aftermath rubble,” wrote Sirland on X. “Heavily depends on the type of house and materials. Just destroying everything isn’t a good idea – we know this. It’s not hard to do that either, in fact what we are doing is much harder to get readable, and playing great”

Sirland has also confirmed that Battlefield Studios has tuned the level of destruction in the game from its open betas last month to better match the type of destruction to the material of the building. Responding to a question about a single C4 or rocket doing enough damage to take down entire buildings, he said that it all came down to building material.

“Balance is set per material and type of damage, explosions differ from kinetic etc,” he explained. “We have tuned things since open beta across many things in this regard. The goal is to make it consistent and for it to occur in regular play. Making each game unique, not all destroyed”

The playtest for the battle royale mode was announced earlier this month, with Battlefield Studios confirming that the core gameplay of the franchise will be retained in the game mode. Along with environmental destruction, this also means that battle royale players can expect things like squads, gadgets, and vehicles as well.

“This is Battlefield’s twist on the classic formula, so you can expect to find all of the core principles of Battlefield taking place within this mode; gadgets, explosives, destructible environments, and vehicles can all be used to secure the win,” wrote the company when it announced the battle royale playtests.

The game mode is slated to have its own bespoke map built from the ground up for battle royale gameplay. This means that, among other things, there will be plenty of Points of Interest that can be explored, as well as various zones with their own distinct themes and layouts. Common transport vehicles will also be quite common. More powerful vehicles, like armored transport vehicles, however, will need to be unlocked over the course of a match. Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode will have 100-player matches, with the player base being split into 25 4-player squads.

Battlefield 6 is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on October 10. For more details, check out how it was optimised for all platforms thanks to development on the less powerful Xbox Series S.
