The International Day of Sign Languages was observed at Holy Cross College on Tuesday with a programme to raise awareness of the importance of the communication system in fostering inclusion and cultural diversity for the hearing-impaired community.
The programme, organised by the PG Research Department of Rehabilitation Science and the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, in collaboration with Centre for Differently Abled Persons (CDAP), Bharathidasan University, began with the affixing of stickers bearing the slogan ‘Signs Connect Us’ by students.
In her address, Priya Balaji, additional general manager, Project Monitoring Group, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, said, “Sign languages are not mere hand movements. They are important languages signifying culture, emotion and human connection.”
M. Prabhavathy, associate professor and director, CDAP, focused on the vital role played by sign languages in empowering hearing impaired individuals.
A CD educating viewers on good and bad touch through sign language was released during the function. CDAP students presented a mime show. Principal Sr. P. Rajakumari, spoke.
