Woman dead after fire rips through B.C. supported housing unit

A woman died after a fire at a supportive housing complex in Maple Ridge early Sunday morning, Sept. 21.
Maple Ridge Fire Rescue was called to the blaze at the Garibaldi Ridge facility at 11749 Burnett Street, and found the fire in one unit.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that one person [is] deceased as a result,” said Maple Ridge fire chief Dave Samson. “Our thoughts are with their loved ones, fellow residents, and staff during this difficult time.”
The fire was contained to one unit, but smoke and water damage impacted a few other units, he added.
Garibaldi Ridge is a three-storey building, and was evacuated for the fire, but some residents were able to return to their units.
The victim was described as a middle-aged woman who was well known and well liked by the residents of Garibaldi Ridge, and they are shaken by her sudden death.
Housing and supports are being provided to the displaced residents through the city’s Emergency Support Services program in coordination with Coast Mental Health and Emergency Management B.C.
“Our fire team is working closely with the Office of the Fire Commissioner and the B.C. Coroner Service as the investigation continues,” said Samson.
A statement from the operator said: “Despite the courageous efforts from Coast Mental Health staff on site and the swift response from the Maple Ridge Fire Department, we are deeply saddened that one resident tragically lost their life. The safety and well-being of our employees, residents, and neighbours remain our highest priority.”
They said 22 residents have been temporarily relocated while the investigation led by Maple Ridge Fire Department is under way and restoration of the damaged units takes place.
Ridge Meadows RCMP officers spoke to a number of individuals on scene, and canvassed the area for possible witnesses and video surveillance. Police are working with fire investigators to determine the exact cause of the fire, however, they say early indications are it is not believed to be suspicious.
Garibaldi Ridge is a 51-unit supportive housing complex that opened in the fall of 2019 to take in those living on the street. It is operated by Coast Mental Health, which also operates the Alouette Heights and Rivers Reach supportive housing complexes in Maple Ridge, as well as The Hub – a drop-in place where homeless people can get food, showers, and access to other services.
