The Girlfriend, the latest thriller sensation on Prime Video, has rapidly gained popularity among TV enthusiasts. Olivia Cooke stars as Cherry, a young, working-class estate agent who becomes entangled with a wealthy family after developing a romantic relationship with a trainee surgeon named Daniel, portrayed by Laurie Davidson. Their relationship appears idyllic, but Cherry doesn’t anticipate Daniel’s overprotective mother Laura, played by Robin Wright, harbouring suspicions about her past. Suddenly, the two women find themselves embroiled in a bitter feud that risks unearthing past traumas and jeopardising their careers. All six episodes were released earlier this week on Wednesday, 10th September, and have already garnered a dedicated fanbase, reports the Express . We won’t reveal the shocking ending here, but suffice to say, the series concludes with a gripping cliffhanger that hints at another season. Let’s delve into what we know so far about the future of The Girlfriend. As of now, Prime Video has not confirmed whether The Girlfriend will return for a second series. The Girlfriend is based on the thriller novel of the same name by Michelle Frances, which has a conclusive ending and no published sequel. However, the events in the season finale seem to suggest a potential continuation. At the programme’s London premiere, producer Jonathan Cavendish told the Manchester Evening News he’s keen to extend the storyline, despite Prime Video remaining tight-lipped about future plans. “If people want a second one… episode six has what I’d like to think is a pretty decent cliffhanger,” he revealed. “So, we originally thought ‘No, we’ll just make one’. Then, as we were going, we thought this is so good it would be a pity [to end it]. “But it’s great to not think about another season until you get to an end and you realise there’s a logic to a cliffhanger. And, I promise you, it’s a good one.” Cavendish’s remarks that the series conclusion was crafted with future episodes in mind suggests The Girlfriend could well return for another run. Viewers will simply have to wait and see whether the show has attracted sufficient audiences to secure recommissioning from the streaming giant, which probably won’t become clear for a couple more weeks. Meanwhile, writer Frances has revealed she’s hopeful all her novels will eventually make it to television. She commented: “I know from working in telly that things can take a long time and it’s a precarious business. “But it would be absolutely fantastic to have another one out there. Fingers crossed people enjoy watching it.” Have you been tuning into The Girlfriend this week or are you saving it for a weekend marathon? The Girlfriend is streaming now on Prime Video.
