Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade finally making its way to a Nintendo platform—the Switch 2 on January 22, 2026—has raised some questions about how Square Enix will handle its physical release. The company has since confirmed that, along with being available digitally through the eShop, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will also be hitting store shelves as a Game-Key Card. This means that buyers of the physical game card will still need to download the entirety of the game.
Interestingly, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is also poised to be the biggest game on the Switch 2 when it comes to storage space requirements. The Game-Key Card will need players to download around 87.9 GB of data (via Eurogamer), which will eat into a major chunk of the console’s 256 GB internal storage. For context, even the other versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake are quite large, with the PC version requiring 94.24 GB at the time of publishing.
On release, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergarde will overtake WWE 2K25 as the largest title on the Nintendo Switch 2. The latter was formerly the largest, coming in at 73.2 GB.
The large size of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade was likely the core reason behind giving it a physical release through Game-Key Cards. Nintendo’s proprietary game format has an upper storage limit of around 64 GB, and also tend to be quite expensive for developers and publishers. Another reason might also have to do with the fact that running games off a Switch 2 cartridge might not be as performant as running them off the internal storage, since the cartridge has a generally slower transfer rate.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade’s Nintendo Switch 2 release was announced earlier this month. The release will essentially be the “complete” version of the first game in the Remake trilogy, including the base game as well as its INTERmission DLC, which will have players take on the role of Yuffie Kisaragi as she experiences the events of Remake from a different perspective.
Recently, Square Enix also confirmed that all games in the Remake trilogy will be released on all platforms. This means that we will also get to see Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth make its way to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. The company’s wording also indicated that the third party of the trilogy—currently unnamed—will also come to PC, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 simultaneously with the PS5 release.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was originally released on PS4 all the way back in 2020. Since then, the title has made its way on to other platforms. It was joined by a sequel—Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth—back in February 2024, which was then released on PC almost a full year after its original PS5-only release.
Since then, Square Enix has made it a point to move its game release strategy to be multiplatform rather than relying on exclusivity deals with a single platform owner. Along with new games, the company also plans to release more of its back catalog on different platforms.
