An earthquake of magnitude has rattled the San Francisco Bay Area, strong enough awaken people across the region. The earthquake was felt at around 2.56 am, reports LA Times, estimating at a magnitude 4.6, centered in Berkeley. A preliminary estimate suggested the earthquake was centered around the corner of Dwight Way and Piedmont Avenue, just a few blocks from the UC Berkeley campus, the report said. It measured 4.3 on the Richter scale, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).The earthquake activated the MyShake earthquake early warning app and man residents said they were woken up by a “strong jolt” in the early hours of Monday morning as an earthquake that rattled the region.Tremors were felt across Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco as terrified residents recalled their entire homes shaking while they heard a loud noise. KTVU Anchor Heather Holmes said it felt “pretty big”. She wrote on X: “Pretty big earthquake just now at 2:56am. Felt a strong jolt here in San Francisco. A second commented: “Felt it in San Bruno,woke my cat up also.Shook for a while longer then most I have felt here.”A third wrote: “Yes, the whole house creaked and shook!” Another said: “I live in South Santa Cruz County and my plants were moving and my chair and the building rocked back and forth. Can’t believe it was in Berkeley!”Others claimed it was the biggest earthquake they’ve felt in a long time. “Biggest earthquake I’ve ever felt (in California 35 years),” one wrote. A second said: “Yes. It was absolutely the biggest one we’ve felt in years. We had a large tree fall on our house a few years ago and it was louder than that. The US National Tsunami Center has confirmed that it is not expecting a tsunami following the quake. The earthquake produced shaking ranging from “light” to “moderate.” Moderate shaking is felt by nearly everyone and can wake people and topple unstable objects, while light shaking may rattle dishes and windows, rock parked cars, and feel like a heavy truck hitting a building.California experiences over 10,000 earthquakes annually, though most go unnoticed.
