Neeraj Chopra’s Stellar First Throw Earns Direct Entry into World Athletics Championships Final

India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra qualified for the final of the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo on Wednesday. Neeraj, the defending champion, unleashed a giant 84.85m throw on his first attempt in Group A of the qualification round, earning direct qualification for the final. His throw was well past the qualification mark of 84.50m. Neeraj, who has a personal and season best of 90.23m, did not attempt any more throws. He won the Worlds gold in Budapest in 2023. The javelin throw final for the World Athletics Championships 2025 is scheduled for Thursday, September 18. Neeraj ended the group stage qualification in third place in Group A, behind Julian Weber of Germany and David Wagner of Poland. He also holds the World Lead throw of 91.51m this season. His throw pushed Neeraj at the third spot. Jakub Vadlejch, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, fell short of the direct qualification mark, managing 84.11m to finish fourth in the group. Meanwhile, Sachin Yadav is the only other Indian thrower to make it the cut for the final after finishing 10th with a best throw of 83.67m. He improved to 83.67m in his second attempt, but it was still below his personal and season best of 85.16m. His effort fell just short of the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who beat Neeraj to the gold at the Paris Olympics, threw 85.28m to also reach to the final. In his first two throws, Arshad struggled – throwing 76.99m and 74.17m.
