Kilmarnock defender insists squad will find 'winning touch' after season of fine margins

Lewis Mayo reckons Kilmarnock are built on overcoming adversity — and has backed them to start getting the rewards he feels their play has deserved this season. Penalty heartache in consecutive games against Celtic and St Mirren saw them suffer a first league defeat of the campaign and exit the League Cup at the quarter-final stage. But while there has been plenty of positives so far this season, they’re still awaiting their first win in the league and are now out of a cup competition. The 25-year-old, though, insists there’s no reason to panic and believes they’ll start finding ways to turn draws into victories. They travel to Tannadice on Saturday aiming to avoid going six games without a win to start the Premiership season. Speaking after their cup exit at the hands of St Mirren, he said: “Everyone is flat — to lose like that is a sucker punch. “When we look back we’ll be killing ourselves that we didn’t take a couple more chances or do things differently. “But we’ll pick ourselves up and go again. If we keep doing that we will get our reward. It’s what Killie are built on and we’ve shown this season already we’ve got character in abundance. “I don’t think the points on the table – or us now being out of the cup – really reflects that. Time and time again we’re giving ourselves these chances to go and win matches and I think everyone in the stadium probably feels that. “We’re just that one last winning touch away.” He added: “The positive is that the manner in which the Celtic game finishes and then to put in the performance and the amount of character and effort everyone put in, you see that it didn’t rock us. “We pick ourselves up and go again. We just need to do that and we’ll give ourselves a chance.” Don’t miss the latest Ayrshire headlines – sign up to our free daily newsletter
