Kitt Nelson reckons Cork City can complete a great escape this season and keep their Premier Division status intact.
The Leesiders are eight points adrift at the bottom of the table, with Sligo Rovers and Galway United ahead of them, and with seven games remaining.
The Preston North End midfielder, at Turner’s Cross on a season-long loan deal, believes the Leesiders can dig their way out of trouble.
City have picked up seven points from their last four league games – and they host table-toppers Shamrock Rovers on Friday.
“We all believe in each other that we can turn it around and we’re on a really good trajectory at the minute,” said the 20-year-old.
“We’re picking up results lately so we’re wanting to keep that going and we know that we can achieve really good things.
“We’re in the semi-final of the FAI Cup and if you win that you can go for Europe and also in the league we’re confident we can turn it around. We’re gaining points on the teams above us and long may that continue.”
Nelson arrived in Cork shortly after signing a three-year contract at Preston. With six goals so far in 30 league and cup appearances, he has caught the eye of his coaches back at Deepdale.
“It’s been really good. The aim for me coming to Cork was obviously to try and get a lot of game time which I’ve been happy to do and chip in with some goals,” said the youngster.
“I wanted to show what I could do at a good level, playing first team football every week, and I think I’ve done that.
“It’s been a big step forward for me personally – going out, playing games and living in a new country as well and all that comes with that. The first couple of weeks it was obviously a big change, but I’d like to think I adapted to it quite quickly.
“It’s definitely made me mature and it’s been a really positive experience for me so far.”
He added: “I know I’ve improved a lot since I was last in the building at Preston. I’ve learned a lot and playing a lot of games has made me a better player.
“Obviously I’m thinking about Cork right now but when I come back I just want to show how much I’ve improved and what I can do.”
