Mahama: Africa must build strong health systems for sovereignty

President John Mahama on Monday told African leaders that strong health systems are essential for the continent’s independence and economic growth, urging governments to treat health spending as an investment rather than a cost.

Speaking at a high-level meeting of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in New York, Mahama said Africa’s sovereignty depended on sustainable health financing, local manufacturing, and pandemic preparedness.

“Health is not a cost. It is the engine of productivity and the foundation of sovereignty,” he said.

The gathering, held under the theme “Securing Africa’s Health Sovereignty: Political Leadership for Sustainable Health Financing, Local Manufacturing, and Pandemic Preparedness,” brought together heads of state and government to reflect on lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mahama’s remarks come as African states seek to expand local vaccine production and build resilience against future health crises.

On Tuesday, he will host a side event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, titled “The Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development,” where policymakers and global partners will discuss frameworks for international health cooperation.

Mahama’s interventions reflect growing calls for Africa to take greater ownership of its health security to avoid being left behind in future pandemics.
