They called the show “Michael Palin in Venezuela” because someone had the idea to take the most beloved of the Pythons – and almost certainly a “National Treasure” at this point – to politically-troubled Venezuela to observe and provide compassionate yet mordant commentary on what he finds. Palin begins and ends in almost certainly the only Venezuelan city anybody has ever heard of – Caracas – and finds extremes of wealth and poverty, luxury hotels and slums, before flying to the Amazon rainforest and Angel Falls. There’s an environmental message (illegal gold mining) and a look at the effects of tourism in the area.
But it’s not all travelogue tropes. Palin and his crew manage to get themselves detained by SEBIN (the intelligence service) for several hours, he releases a 10 foot anaconda into the wild and has an argument with a crocodile before traveling to the “no go” area on the Colombian border and then having a memorable but unpleasant encounter in a village under siege by toxic moths.

S01 E02: On the second leg of Michael’s epic journey he visits a stunningly beautiful cluster of coral islands and gets up close to anacondas – but also gets detained by SEBIN, the country’s intelligence service. (Tues, Sept 23)
S01 E03: On the final leg, Michael visits Zulia state, on the UK Foreign Office no visit list; tries to avoid thousands of “toxic moths” and visits Maracaibo city, once rich from oil, now suffering severe economic downturn. The series ends back in Caracas at a government-sponsored Carnival parade, which is a mix of spectacle, music and visible security presence. (Tues, Sept 30)
How did Palin and his crew escape detention by the Venezuela security service?
The guards googled “Michael Palin”, found Monty Python sketches (including the “fish-slapping dance”) online, loved them and released their famous captive and his colleagues.
