The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is facing scrutiny after the removal of Alex O’Keefe, a Black screenwriter known for his work on the FX series The Bear, from a Metro-North train. According to the MTA, security footage confirmed that O’Keefe was occupying two seats with his legs and refused to comply when asked to move.Live EventsIn videos recorded by O’Keefe and a bystander, he is seen questioning the officers’ actions, stating, “You’re going to arrest the one Black dude on the train because this white woman said she didn’t like the way I was sitting.” He repeatedly asserts that he hasn’t done anything illegal. The officers handcuffed O’Keefe and issued him a summons for disorderly conduct.O’Keefe asks as the video begins, pointing to an older white woman sitting one row ahead of him. One officer begins cuffing O’Keefe as he says “I haven’t done anything illegal.” A second officer responds, “Let’s go.”The department said an investigation, aided by body-worn cameras and onboard security footage, showed the 31-year-old screenwriter with both legs stretched across the seat. MTAPD officers then instructed O’Keefe to leave the train, and when he refused, they handcuffed him. According to NBC News website, O’Keefe said in an email to The Associated Press that he was working and needed to run an interview request by his legal team.
