Independent MP candidates‘leading’ in Dowa District

Unofficial results in the September 16 General Election show that six independent parliamentary candidates in Dowa District are leading in their respective constituencies.

The six are Annie Chibwana of Dowa Central, Mike Chipala of Dowa Central East, Rodwel Khombeni of Dowa Ngara, Ida Chitsotsa Mchenga of Dowa West, Hope Tionge Zamba of Dowa South East and Kendall Kamwendo of Dowa Mndolera.

The unofficial results indicate that Chibwana got 19 085 votes while Darlington Harawa of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) polled 5 646 in Dowa Central Constituency.

In Dowa Ngara, Khombeni looks set to beat MCP director of elections Elias Chakwera who has polled 6 200 votes against Chakwera’s 5 621 votes while in Dowa Mndolera Constituency, musician Kendall Kamwendo was leading with 14 434 votes against MCP candidate Abel Kayembe’s 7 065.

In Dowa West, Mchenga was leading with 14 254 votes against Alexander Kusamba Dzonzi’s 12 849 votes while in Dowa South East, Zamba got 26 756 votes and MCP’s Halima Daud who was trailing at 3 997.

Another independent Chipala was ahead with 11 592 votes against Martin Luka of MCP who was at 5 587 in Dowa Central East Constituency.

In an interview, a political analyst and lecturer at Malawi University of Business and Applied Science Chimwemwe Tsitsi said this is a reflection that the party did not organise free and fair primaries.

“This is critical since the number of MPs a party gets in an election determines the proportional funding it gets,” he said.

Candidates that have unofficially retained their seats in their constituencies in the district are former minister of Agriculture Samuel Kawale of Dowa North East Constituency who got 12 142 votes against an independent candidate Godfrey Chimdzeka who polled 10 343 and MCP secretary general Richard Chimwendo Banda of Dowa East Constituency who is leading with 25 111 votes against independent Lizzie Ndomondo who has 3 997.

In Dowa Mphudzu, MCP candidate Arthur Sungitsa was with 12 068 votes against independent Chunal Chombwa who got 6 944 votes.

MCP director of legal affairs George Kadzipatike is also reported to be leading in Dowa Kasangadzi Constituency with 18 006 votes against independent Enos Chitatanga’s 5 980. Dowa has 10 constituencies
