The first reviews are out for Apple’s latest smartphones. Key to the range is the new iPhone Air, with a different design and exceptional light weight (more on that below).

Here are five features of the new phone that may have passed you by.
1. The Air Has A 3D-Printed Titanium USB-C Socket
With a phone this thin, some of the elements like the USB-C socket have to be especially slim. Titanium is strong, so that’s what it’s made of here. And not just titanium, no, this was 3D-printed, Apple explains.

The new design demanded a unique USB-C port, one that was thinner and stronger than before. There’s a knock-on to this in that it improved material utilization by a third.

MORE FOR YOU
Apple’s snap-on battery is designed for the iPhone Air only. Apple is clear about this and it wasn’t kidding. I’ve tried to use it on the other new iPhones and though it’s possible, it’s very tricky. The battery is too tall to fit in the normal way on other models, so you have to turn it horizontal, and even then it barely works.
You can fudge it into place if you’re desperate, but, honestly, get a different battery pack for the other phones, you’ll be glad you did.
3. Next-Gen Portraits With Single Camera
This is the first single-camera iPhone capable of what Apple calls next-generation portraits. That’s when it automatically recognizes people, dogs and cats and captures depth information. You don’t have to remember to go into portrait mode when you’re taking photos, it does it automatically.
This means that every iPhone in the current range except the iPhone 16e is capable of these next-gen portraits.
4. Bright photographic style
This is the new style that arrived with iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Apple explains that ti lifts and brightens skin tones and adds an extra touch of vibrancy throughout the image. As with other styles, you can set Bright as your default style if you’d like and they change the look of the subject only, not the rest of the scene.
5. Thinnest Ever, Yes. Lightest Ever, Almost
Apple says it’s the thinnest iPhone yet. But there are two caveats when it comes to weight. First, it’s the lightest full-screen iPhone — models with Face ID rather than Touch ID, in other words. Second, there are two exceptions to this, and they’re not very surprising. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini were lighter. To be exact, iPhone 12 mini weighed 135g and iPhone 13 mini was 141g. The iPhone Air is 165g.
