Peters leads Moline boys to Western Big 6 golf four-peat

It was a banner day for the golfers from Moline High School on Monday at the Western Big 6 Conference boys and girls meets.
The Maroons swept team and individual honors on the boys’ side, and Haley Robertson made it back-to-back Big 6 individual titles on the girls’ side.
Peters leads Maroons boys to WB6 title
Despite being on a new layout for the conference gathering, Coach Max Haverland’s squad still won its fourth straight Big 6 team title.
Picking a great time for his first tournament win of the season, senior Greer Peters led the Maroons with a 1-under 69 at Quincy Country Club.
“I was thinking about that a lot, especially yesterday and this morning,” said Peters of his team being the defending champs. “I really wanted that four-peat — I’m happier about that than winning individually, to be honest with you.”
Peters liked the Quincy Country Club layout that hosted the eight-team gathering. He led Moline to a 304 team score, which topped runner-up Quincy (331), Geneseo (338) and Galesburg (339).
“I can get used to this,” joked Haverland of another championship bar that goes to the winner.
The Maroons finished with four players earning first-team All-Big 6 honors, with sophomores Gage Powell (76) and Grant Dahlstrom (81) placing second and T5, respectively. Junior standout Isaac Rumler was struggling with an illness, according to Haverland, barely able to finish and carding a 78 that placed him third with Geneseo senior Kwin VanKerrebroeck.
Geneseo senior Ashton Veloz earned second-team All-Big 6 honors, tying for 11th with his 85.
All six of Moline’s golfers earned all-league honors as junior Reese Daniel (84) placed 10th and senior Aden Blome (85) tied for 11th.
Peters was the most dialed in of the Maroons, noting that he hit 16 greens in regulation and finished with 33 putts. He had three birdies on the QCC front side and a pair of bogeys on the back 9.
“I do like courses that make you think more,” said Peters, noting there were some open holes to bomb away on. “I like picking out a target and just going right at the target.”
Girls’ Big 6
Robertson overcame one double-bogey at Saukie Golf Course to post a 7-over 73 and win the Western Big 6 individual title by six shots over Geneseo junior Claire Degrave.
The Moline junior carded birdies on the dogleg par-4 sixth hole and the long par-3 15th to help offset seven other bogeys.
Robertson’s win helped the Maroons to a third-place finish with a 351 total, finishing behind league champs Quincy (338) and Sterling (346), who each had four girls earn all-conference honors.
Moline juniors Allyn Fosbinder (T11, 88) and Ally Wyffels (T15, 92) also earned All-WB6 honors.
Rock Island had two golfers earn first-team Big 6 honors as freshman Arianna Williams (81) placed fourth and senior Mallory Hudnall (82) finished in a four-way tie for fifth. Rocky junior Allegrah Sutter also shot an 88 to tie for 11th and earn second-team all-league honors.
