The Rewind: East football earns season’s first win in Boot game; Anchorage Wolverines open season with road shootouts
Welcome back to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.
This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school and professional levels, as well as some developments on the college front. The 2025 season for high school flag and tackle football saw a top contender fall from the ranks of the unbeaten. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team got off to its best start in three years. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.
Headlines and highlights
The sixth week of the high school football season was highlighted by hard-fought games at the Division I level, as all but one went down to the wire. Of the three decided by a single point, the most dramatic was the annual Boot game between rivals Bartlett and Bettye Davis East Anchorage that honors the memory of former Thunderbird defensive lineman Aanooali Filoialli.
Last year’s meeting took six overtimes to decide before East ultimately prevailed. While this year’s game was decided in regulation and only featured a fraction of the 98 total points from a year ago, it was every bit as thrilling as the Thunderbirds got to keep the Boot trophy following a low-scoring 7-6 win, their first victory of the season.
“It’s always a classic,” East head coach Jeff Trotter said. “It’s fun having these two teams come together because it’s always a battle. It doesn’t matter if a team is up or down, it always ends up being a dogfight and both teams play hard until the very end.”
The Thunderbirds came firing out the gates with a 64-yard touchdown sprint from senior running back Prince Siliato on the game’s first play from scrimmage, giving the home team an early lead.
“It’s a blessing,” he said. “It was really exciting, especially hearing the crowd and getting our first win.”
Those points would be the only ones scored until Bartlett got on the board with a 24-yard connection from sophomore quarterback Tatum Pogtis to senior wide receiver Salvation Tyrell with 5:35 left in the game.
A missed extra point and two turnovers forced by East in the final 126 seconds proved to be the difference in the end.
“Our defense has gotten better every week since we finished that second half against (Southwest) San Diego,” Trotter said. “I think they’ve showed it here the last two weeks, and if we can keep this up and our offense catches up a little bit, we might give some people some fits.”
He tells his players, “You can’t have a winning streak without winning the first one,” and the Thunderbirds plan on building on this win down the stretch and heading into the postseason, where every team at the Division I level qualifies regardless of their regular-season record.
“No season is easy,” Trotter said. “It’s hard to be winless and it’s hard to be winning. You just have to manage different issues throughout the season. A win is a win and at the end of the day, I’m glad we won the boot.”
[Alaska prep football roundup: West holds on late against Service to stay undefeated]
In prep volleyball action, two of the top three teams in the CIC suffered their first conference losses this past week. On Tuesday, South swiftly took care of business against Service on the road with a three-set sweep of their Hillside rival.
“It was a good win, they worked together as a team and we had some momentum shifts in the game that we were able to grab back that I thought was good,” South head coach Julie Kleven said. “I thought they did a good job of coming back and finishing it off.”
Just two days later, Dimond successfully defended its home court and took over sole possession of the top spot in the conference standings by sweeping the Wolverines in a trio of hard-fought sets.
The last major race of the high school cross country regular season took place out on the trails of Chugiak High School on Saturday. The two distance runners who have dominated all season did so once again as Wasilla’s Hailee Giacobbe and East’s Katahdin Staples both came out on top with their respective undefeated records intact.
“Everyone’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, you won,’ and I’m trying to be happy about that, but at the same time, I’m still not where I want to be,” Giacobbe said.
While the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year and Division I girls state champion wasn’t satisfied with her result, Staples, who is the defending Division I boys champion, was elated after winning his race.
“Just to get this opportunity to run fast and be on these fun courses is just the best feeling in the world,” he said.

On the college scene, UAA’s volleyball team stayed on the road for the second week in a row and began conference play with a pair of convincing victories. The Seawolves notched a four-set win over Seattle Pacific on Thursday and swept Montana State Billings on Saturday before heading home. Senior outside hitter Tia Allen recorded double-doubles in both matches, recording a combined 25 kills and 24 digs.
“Our team continued to display the focus that they have throughout the first month of the season,” UAA head coach Stacie Meisner said in a statement. “It’s great to start the league with two road wins, but we’ll need to keep improving and get ready for a couple tough home matches next week.”
For the second week in a row, the UAF volleyball team extended its winning streak thanks in large part to the standout play of junior libero Tessa Onaga, who was named GNAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. In the Nanooks’ back-to-back sweeps over the same conference foes UAA went up against, she recorded 42 digs, three service aces and eight assists, while committing zero service errors and zero reception errors in the two matches combined.
“Tessa seems to constantly take her level of play to new heights,” UAF head coach Brian Scott said in a statement. “She made defensive plays look very easy last weekend. She did a fantastic job of making a quality dig or save, which allowed our offense to run in an efficient manner and put us in good positions to score.”
The Anchorage Wolverines opened the 2025-26 season with an exciting two-game road series against the Minnesota Wilderness over the weekend. Both games resulted in shootouts with the Wolverines dropping the first 5-4 on Friday night before rebounding in a 3-2 thriller Saturday. Forward Andrew Karkoc scored the team’s first goal of the season in Game 1 and clinched the victory in Game 2 by scoring the lone goal in the shootout period. Anchorage’s leading goal scorer over the two contests was fellow forward Luc Bydal, who found the back of the net once in each game.

Alaska stars shining Outside
Anchorage’s Obed Vargas continued his breakout campaign for the Seattle Sounders by recording the team’s lone goal in a 3-1 loss to Inter Miami CF last Tuesday in a rematch of last month’s Leagues Finals match. It marked the third of the season for the 20-year-old All-Star.
Three days later, news broke that he and his teammate, Reed Baker-Whiting, were called up to the U-20 FIFA World Cup teams for their respective countries. Vargas will be representing Mexico while Baker-Whiting will be on Team USA.
Anchorage’s Deuce Zimmerman continued his blazing-hot start to the season for the Western New Mexico University football team last weekend. The former East star had a fourth straight prolific performance in a 56-27 loss to Angelo State on Saturday. Zimmerman tied for the Mustangs lead in receiving yards with 102 yards on seven receptions and scored at least one touchdown for the fourth week in a row.
Anchorage’s Alani Makihele helped the University of Nevada Las Vegas football team continue its undefeated start in a narrow 41-38 win over University of Miami of Ohio this past Saturday. The former star offensive lineman for West led the blocking effort from his guard spot that paved the way for a fourth straight outing of 30-plus points and more than 140 yards on the ground with 220, the Rebels’ second-highest total since Week 1. Individually, Makihele continues to be one of the top players at this position in the country as his overall Pro Football Focus grade of 70.2 is the eighth best.
[Anchorage’s Alani Makihele will end his college football journey back where it began]
Fairbanks’ Earl Parker helped the Hutchinson Community College football team stay undefeated in a 35-17 win over Iowa Central Community College on Saturday. The former Lathrop star defensive back recorded three total tackles, including a pair of solos, and his first pass breakup for the reigning national champion Blue Dragons.
Palmer’s Cole Hamilton tied for lead in total tackles for the Division III College of DuPage football team in a narrow 20-17 loss to Division I Monroe University on Saturday. The former Colony star recorded eight takedowns, including five solos, one for a loss.
Anchorage’s Klaire Rhodes got one last tune-up ahead of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships this week by winning the 2025 Run The Rut. The multi-time Mount Marathon champion conquered the 28K race in Big Sky, Montana, earlier this month by being the first to break the tape with a mark of 3 hours, 53 minutes and 6 seconds.
