Hohoe United Football Club is set to make history on Friday night as they compete in Ghana’s top-flight league, the Ghana Premier League, for the first time on September 12, 2025.
They will face one of Ghana’s most storied and successful clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
While one might be tempted to draw parallels between the two clubs’ histories, it is important to note that Hohoe United is the successor to Liberty Professionals, not merely another iteration, of the same name, it’s the slot.
History, in this sense, serves as a compass for understanding the geography of human experiences.
After acquiring Liberty Professionals and completing the necessary paperwork, Hohoe United set out with great ambition and the goal of reaching the top.
Incredibly, the club needed just three seasons in Ghana’s second-tier league to achieve its ambitions, making their journey truly commendable.
In the 2024/25 Division One League season, Hohoe United had an impressive performance, securing promotion with 72 points from 30 matches.
They won 23 games, lost 4, and drew 3. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of the club.
Founded in 2023, Hohoe United has quickly established itself in Ghanaian football, becoming a source of pride for the community.
As they prepare for their debut against giants like Accra Hearts of Oak and other teams in the Ghana Premier League, Hohoe United is eager to make a positive impact in the league.
Such an attitude is likely to please fans and attract even more supporters.
The Hohoe United fans have rallied around their team, embodying the spirit of unity and connection through football, anytime they rally with the cry of “Womeee ,Womeetor, Womeenor” (meaning who are you? Male or Female we don’t see or recognize you) throughout Hohoe.
Matches at home are expected to be thrilling encounters, with their passionate fans serving as the “Number 12” man on the field.
While away games will undoubtedly be challenging, the upcoming season looks exciting for the “White-Red and Blue” team.
This marks a new era for football in the Volta Region.
With Hohoe United joining Kpando Hearts of Lions in the top-flight league, it is the first time two clubs from the Volta Region are competing at this level.
This long-awaited moment brings excitement and hope for the growth of football in the region, presenting an opportunity for local businesspeople and investors to support the sport.
Though the season opener on September 12 will take place outside the region, it presents a valuable marketing opportunity for Volta football and for Hearts of Oak, which is one of Ghana’s most successful clubs.
Hearts of Oak will aim to kick off their season on a strong note, having finished fourth last season with 16 wins, 10 draws, and 8 losses.
They also had a promising pre-season, winning the Democracy Cup 2025 with a 1-0 victory over regional rivals Accra Great Olympics.
As Hohoe United prepares for their inaugural match, they hope to make a statement with a victory.
Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak is looking to launch a title push and aims for a win at home.
How this match will unfold remains a question, as excitement builds ahead of the encounter set to take place at Accra Sports Stadium at 7:00 PM local time.
It will attract the presence of His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, the President of the Republic of Ghana as the Special Guest of Honour.
Music lovers are also in for a treat as Ghanaian music sensation Stonebwoy takes the stage for a live performance, bringing his unique blend of Afrobeats and highlife to the season opener.
