Katie Taylor once again proved she is one of the biggest prize fighters of her generation after viewing figures from her fight against Amanda Serrano were compared to the Terence Crawford v Canelo Alvarez mega-bout.
Two of the greatest fighters of their generation, Alvarez and Crawford, met at a packed-out Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas last Saturday. The Americans’ unanimous decision win against Alvarez further solidified his reputation as the pound-for-pound king.
In what was one of the highest quality match-ups in boxing history, Netflix went big on the fight as they acquired rights and put it on their platform.
Viewing figures for the fight have now been released, with a whopping 41 million viewers tuning in for the main event over the weekend.
However, that figure was dwarfed by Katie Taylor’s rematch against Amanda Serrano, which served as the co-main event for Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson. Some 74 million tuned in for their epic bout in Dallas last November.
But both figures were dwarfed even further by Paul versus Tyson, with 125 million streaming the main event.
Taylor’s trilogy bout against Serrano would see a big drop, with six million tuning in for the fight that took place in Madison Square Garden.
The Bray boxer has not announced whether she will return to the ring, but promoter Eddie Hearn says the chances are 50/50.
Hearn met with Taylor last week to discuss future plans, but said that 39-year-old Taylor might wait until early next year before deciding on her future.
“She said after the Serrano fight, ‘if I fight again’, and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard her say that.
“I thought after the fight, what a great time to retire, now a bit of time passes and I don’t know. I would say she’s 50-50 in her head.”
Taylor has long been vocal about her desire to fight at Croke Park before she retires but talks between promoters and the venue have stalled.
The other intriguing match-up for Taylor would be a trilogy bout against Chantelle Cameron, the only fighter to beat Taylor in her professional career.
