Ex-Sevilla transfer guru Monchi makes shock exit from Aston Villa

While any success in football has many architects, if there was one putting in the most blueprints for Sevilla’s 21st century golden era, it was Monchi. The former Sevilla transfer guru is now set to be on the market again.
Synonymous with Sevilla’s seven Europa League titles in the last two decades, Monchi revolutionised the game in Spain with his cutting edge recruitment approach. Originally helping Los Nervionenses from Segunda to European glory, Monchi returned to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan after a brief spell at AS Roma. However two summers ago, he departed the club again, after results took a turn.
Monchi to leave Aston Villa
Following up on reports from England that Monchi would be leaving the club, Diario AS have confirmed that President of Football Operations Monchi will be leaving Aston Villa. Described as ‘not entirely unexpected’ but a major move by John Percy, Monchi’s exit represents a major power shift at Villa Park, given that he had a strong connection with Unai Emery, whom he appointed as Sevilla manager previously.
Two years of up and down for Monchi in the Midlands
After joining in 2023, Monchi’s work helped the Villains to qualify for Champions League football in his first season, and after a successful trip to the quarter-finals, finished sixth last season. However this year has been a rough start for Aston Villa, sitting 18th with three points and no wins from their opening five games.
Restricted by the Premier League’s Profit and Loss rules, Aston Villa have been unable to do as much business as they would have liked this past summer, which may have been a factor in his exit. While his recent work at Villa, and the end of his Sevilla tenure might have gone poorly, one of the iconic figures in the scouting game is back on the market by the looks of things. Monchi has in the past dodged questions over a third return to Sevilla.
