The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New York Jets in the last matchup between the two teams, so it’s not like the Bucs came into their Week 3 matchup looking for revenge, or anything.Or maybe a few key figures on the team were. Especially after listening to what Baker Mayfield had to say after the game.”I loved it,” Mayfield told reporters when asked how it felt to see Todd Bowles get a win as head coach over the team that once fired him in the Jets. “It’s also [Steve Wilkes] their d-coordinator [who] was the one that cut me in Carolina. A lot of stuff was personal today – [also] Haason Reddick, former Jet. A lot of people.”
The NFL is a cruel business. Coaches and players know this and understand, but that doesn’t keep them from holding grudges against their former employers and/or coworkers. We all know that Mayfield loves to carry a chip on his shoulder, as well, so it’s no surprise to hear him say he was happy to get a little payback the coach who cut him a few years back.
Mayfield is hovering around the MVP conversation after beating the Jets
One things is absolutely clear for the Bucs this season: There is no chance in hell they are 3-0 without Mayfield playing quarterback. He was great once again on Sunday, completing 19-of-29 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown. He also added 44 rushing yards on four carries that included a key 33-yard run late in the game that helped the Bucs beat the Jets.Mayfield’s stats aren’t rewriting history, by any means, but it’s the plays he’s making and when he’s making them that matter the most. He’s been clutch for three straight weeks and the “it” factor is a large reason why Tampa bay is undefeated.
Right now, he’s still on the MVP bubble. However, if the Bucs get a win over Jalen Hurts and the Eagles and he plays well in Week 4 that will will change. Beating a 1-2 Falcons team, and 0-3 Texans and Jets teams won’t catch many people’s attention. Beating the reigning Super Bowl champs, however, will certainly give Mayfield the respect he’s due.Until then, he’ll enjoy this win for a couple of days and start gearing up for that challenge after.
