India looks to stabilise supply of critical minerals via Latin America

India is pressing hard to secure stable critical mineral supply chains from resource-rich Peru, Chile and Argentina in South America in the backdrop of increasing focus on renewables and green mobility.While India will hold a third round of FTA negotiations with Chile in the near future, a high-level delegation from India’s mines ministry is visiting Peru this week to tap into opportunities, it has been learnt.India is eyeing to import lithium, copper and rare earths from Peru and Chile. India currently imports gold from Peru and an FTA with Peru is also under consideration. The goal is to conclude the two FTAs in the shortest possible time amid turmoil in global supply chains and weaponisation of resources.Five Indian companies have currently invested in the mining sector in Peru. It is estimated that their present investment is $61 million, according to a factsheet by the Indian Embassy in Peru. Peru is among the top five trading partners of India in Latin America.In Chile, which has among the world’s largest lithium and copper reserves, India is eyeing to establish stronger economic footprints.Live EventsArgentina, which was visited by PM Modi in June, presents big opportunities in critical minerals, energy and agri products.
