Two 20-year-old sports pitches in east Pollokshields, which are near the end of their usable life, will receive a £300,000 boost.
Local councillor Zen Ghani announced the multi use games areas (MUGA) located beside Pollokshields community centre and within Maxwell Square Park are to be upgraded as there have been concerns over their condition.
Councillor Ghani said the move will provide “safe, high-quality spaces for local children and young people” as the area suffers from poverty and high levels of overcrowding within homes.
The cash boost for the Glasgow City Council owned pitches was awarded at the Pollokshields Area Partnership meeting this week, which is chaired by councillor Ghani.
The SNP councillor said: “The pitches were around 20 years old and will soon approach the end of their design life. It has just been caused by normal wear and tear over the many years of being used.”
The Holyrood election candidate for Cathcart and Pollok added: “This investment is about giving young people in our community the safe and modern facilities they deserve.
“East Pollokshields suffers from a high level of overcrowding and poverty, so it is vital that we have local facilities for young people to improve their health, increase inclusion, and provide a sense of local pride. I’m proud to have led the Pollokshields Area Partnerships charge in securing this funding for East Pollokshields.”
“Bailie Norman MacLeod and I listened to the community and acted. The condition of these pitches has been a concern for a long time, and I’m pleased we’re now taking real, tangible action.”
The money comes from the council’s neighbourhood infrastructure improvement fund – which sees £1 million go to every council ward in the city for communities.
