Mangaluru schools to begin Dasara holidays from September 20

Mangaluru: Schools across Mangaluru and the undivided Dakshina Kannada district are set to begin their Dasara mid-term holidays from September 20. The break will cover institutions under both the state syllabus and the central curriculum (CBSE), with reopening dates varying slightly depending on the school managements.

Holiday dates for state syllabus schools

According to the Department of School Education and Literacy, the holidays for government, aided, and unaided schools following the state syllabus will be observed from September 20 to October 6. Normal classes will resume on October 7.

This schedule ensures that students and teachers get an extended break to coincide with the festive season of Dasara, which is widely celebrated in Karnataka.

CBSE schools follow similar timeline

In the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, schools under the CBSE curriculum will also commence their mid-term holidays on September 20, continuing until October 2. Classes are set to resume from October 3.

However, officials clarified that there could be minor variations depending on each CBSE school’s management. Some institutions that provide longer breaks during Diwali or Christmas tend to shorten the Dasara holidays to balance the academic calendar.

Special classes for exam-bound students

Even as the holidays approach, several schools are planning special classes during the break, especially for students preparing for crucial board exams such as the SSLC or improvement examinations.

Education department sources emphasised that such sessions will be designed to avoid placing undue pressure on students or parents. Instead, the focus will remain on revision, guidance, and doubt-clearing exercises.

Community and cultural significance

The Dasara festival, which marks the victory of good over evil, is celebrated with grandeur across Karnataka, particularly in Mysuru. For coastal Karnataka too, the season is an occasion for cultural gatherings, religious observances, and family reunions. The extended school break allows students and their families to participate fully in these festivities.

MANGALURU: With the announcement of holiday schedules, students can look forward to a festive break starting September 20. While state syllabus schools will reopen on October 7, CBSE institutions in the district will resume classes from October 3, subject to minor management-level variations. The arrangement balances festive celebrations with academic needs, ensuring students enjoy their holidays without compromising on preparations for upcoming exams.
