Bobby Grier, a longtime NFL executive and the father of Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, has died. He was 82.
Bobby was a longtime executive for the New England Patriots and Houston Texans and a former consultant for the Dolphins.
His career as a football coach and front office executive with the trio of NFL teams spanned seven decades.
‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of Bobby Grier, father of general manager Chris Grier. Bobby was a longtime executive for the Patriots and Texans and a former consultant for the Dolphins. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Grier family,’ the official X account for the Dolphins posted.
Grier’s career in the NFL began in 1981 as an assistant coach for the Patriots, spending time bouncing from the front office to the sidelines until 1993.
It was then when he was named New England’s director of pro scouting, a role he held until 1995. Grier worked his way up the Patriots organization until he made a move to the then-expansion Houston Texans in 2000.

The longtime executive’s final NFL Draft with the Patriots saw Grier be part of the team to select Tom Brady in the sixth round, changing NFL history forever.
Grier stayed with the Texans organization, first as an associate director in scouting, then as a personnel advisor for 16 seasons.
Grier made his final organizational switch in 2017, becoming a consultant in Miami under his oldest son, Chris.
Mike Grier, Bobby’s younger son, is one of the most accomplished African Americans in NHL history.
Mike played for 14 seasons for four teams and was named the first Black general manager in the NHL by the San Jose Sharks in 2022, a role he still holds today.
Neither Grier brother, nor the Sharks, have publicly commented on Bobby’s passing.
