CIES Football have released their latest list of most expensive current squads assembled in the world right now.
Chelsea get criticised a lot for the amount they have spent to put their squad rebuild together since the new ownership came in. They have had a huge rebuild that has included a big clear out as well as signing in a bunch of new players. Not many players have managed to stick it out through this big rebuild, with Reece James being probably the only one!
Chelsea’s spending has often drawn criticism from the likes of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville during their Sky Sports punditry, and Carragher has actually been questioning why Chelsea have still not improved the goalkeeper or centre backs off the back of losing to Manchester United at the weekend.
Former England striker Wayne Rooney labelled some decisions made by Maresca as strange after the game. Although this was criticism aimed at Maresca rather than the squad build.
Chelsea get their fair share of questions asked though, and even their own fans have been on their backs since they arrived and questioning the big squad rebuild.
Chelsea top the list
So it will probably come as no surprise to hear that Chelsea have the most expensive squad in the world right now.
The updated list of the 100 costliest squads to assemble in world football has been revealed by the CIES Football Observatory, with 24 English clubs included.
Unsurprisingly, Chelsea top the list for a second consecutive year with their current squad being assembled at a cost of £1.1 billion.
Pressure is on
The pressure has always been on Chelsea to now deliver on the pitch to warrant all that spending, and this season there is going to be the most amount of pressure so far and if they don’t deliver, things will turn hugely toxic. A Conference League and Club World Cup win will not suffice unless they’re seriously challenging for the Premier League and making a go of it in the Champions League.
