Pete Alonso Sends Vague Message on Mets Future After Potentially Final Home Game

The New York Mets are fighting for a postseason spot and will need to play well in the final week to do so.
While the entire team is focused on making the postseason, Pete Alonso could be playing his final six games with the Mets. The Mets will travel to Chicago and then to Miami to end the regular season. Considering the team is fighting for the final wild card spot in the National League, Sunday may have been Alonso’s final game at Citi Field.
Alonso did not find a long-term deal in free agency last year. He agreed to return to the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal that allows him to opt out after this season. After a stellar season, he should have plenty of interest in free agency.
Alonso has spoken highly of the Mets organization his entire career, but if the team still does not want to pay him, some other team will. Alonso spoke on his future with the team, but did not provide much.
“We’ll see what happens, but I am a firm believer that the right thing is going to happen,” Alonso said after Sunday’s loss, per the New York Post’s Mike Puma.
Alonso is no stranger to questions about him potentially playing his final games with the Mets. He went through the same thing last season. Regardless, he reminded everyone what he thinks of the Mets.
“This place has been really special to me,” Alonso said, per Puma. “The fans are awesome, super passionate and really dedicated to this team.”
Alonso, like everyone else, has no clue what his future holds. MLB is a business, and Alonso is going to do what is best for him. The Mets and other teams were clearly unwilling to commit to him long-term last season. This year, Alonso has raised his average while hitting even more home runs than last season.
Losing Alonso would be a brutal blow for the Mets fan base. However, there is a chance he has priced himself out of the Mets’ budget or that the team simply still won’t commit to him long-term.
