The scammers used the Bengaluru police logo as their profile picture and lured people with that. As they began to scam the woman using forged documents stamped with fake seals of the Supreme Court, ED and the RBI, the scammers accused the woman of human trafficking. They threatened to arrest her under the National Security Act (NSA) unless she transferred the money. The next day, on September 6, she transferred the money from her Union Bank pension to their bank account, which was linked to a shell entity in Maharashtra. However, even after extorting over Rs 6 lakh, the fraudsters did not stop. She got another call from a different number and started threatening her with forged court notices and kept on video calling her. Days later, on September 8, the doctor had severe chest pain and collapsed at her home after days of torture and harassment. She was taken to a nursing home and then Apollo Spectra Clinic, but she died around 12:30 pm. The police have filed a case against the cyber fraudsters under the IT Act and other laws, including charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
