Michael Palin In Venezuela

The brave TV traveller ventures into the dangerous but beautiful South American country

Venezuela is full of friendly people and natural wonders, from the Amazon Rainforest to the Caribbean Sea. But Michael Palin doesn’t do easy, and is quick to point out what makes this a more risky trip than your average package holiday. President Nicolas Maduro, for example, is considered a dictator, presiding over a country referred to as the most dangerous in South America. Unfazed, Michael is our guide to all Venezuela has to offer, starting in the capital, Caracas. There, he helps us to understand how a country that was once oil-rich has been ravaged by economic decline.

Mass migration has seen some 15 percent of the population flee due to rampant inflation, scant jobs and crippling food shortages. On the flipside, for those who can afford to stay, or visit, the country offers so much beauty, and Michael soaks it up at the stunning Canaima Lagoon where the-then 81-year-old steps inside a waterfall: ‘I’m 81, I shouldn’t be here, I should be in bed,’ but, mad with the power of this and other ‘watery wonders of the world’, he’s very glad he didn’t take a nap.
