Five critically acclaimed movies that came to Paramount Plus in September 2025

Every month, Paramount Plus (like all the best streaming services) brings us a fresh set of movies and shows to stream, but that influx can be a bit of a headache: How do you pick what you want to watch first?
I’ve looked at everything that’s new to Paramount Plus this September and found a handful of movies that have earned at least a 90% score (or higher) on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. While that’s not necessarily a guarantee that you’ll personally enjoy the film, a score above that threshold indicates that most critics liked what they saw and it could be worth streaming.
This month, you can look forward to some classic watches, one of the best sci-fi movies of the last decade, and more. Here are the five new to Paramount Plus movies you should consider watching first in September 2025.

‘Arrival’ (2016)

I’m pretty sure I bring up “Arrival” every time it moves to a different streamer — Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-winning sci-fi drama is just that good.
In this thought-provoking watch, gigantic alien spacecraft touch down around the world. As panic grows across planet Earth, translator and linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is recruited to try and establish a means of communicating with the “Heptapods.” As the world around them teeters on the brink of conflict, Banks and her team race to learn why the aliens have arrived before it’s too late.

‘Face/Off’ (1997)

If it’s a thriller you want, “Face/Off” is the movie to stream on Paramount Plus in September; John Woo’s wild action thriller is a blast. We meet two men at war: FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) and powerful criminal, Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage). Years after the latter killed his son during a botched assassination attempt, Archer finally corners his sworn enemy, but learns Troy has planted a bomb capable of blowing up all of LA and claiming the lives of everyone involved.

And since the only other person who knows the location of the device is Troy’s brother, Pollux, Archer undergoes an experimental facial transplant to track the brother down. But when Troy wakes up, he sets out to get revenge on the man who stole his face.

If you fancy a laugh, then I’d strongly recommend streaming “Galaxy Quest,” Dean Parisot’s “Star Trek” spoof adventure. This 1999 sci-fi comedy parodies the beloved franchise and its fans, to hilarious effect, thanks to a stacked cast (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, and Daryl Mitchell).

Jason Nesmith (Allen) has continued to thrive on the attention from the show’s fandom (unlike his co-stars), and at a convention, he’s approached by a group who wants his help. As it turns out, that group of “fans” was comprised of Thermians, real-life aliens who believed the show was true, and wanted the crew of the NSEA Protector’s help in taking on a dangerous foe. Thus, it falls to Nesmith to get the “Galaxy Quest” crew back together to thwart actual intergalactic conflict.

‘Old Henry’ (2021)

If you’re in the mood for a Western, then Potsy Ponciroli’s “Old Henry” should be on your Paramount Plus radar this month. This action Western revolves around farmer and widower Henry (Tim Blake Nelson) and his son Wyatt (Gavin Lewis), who take in an injured man with a bag full of cash called Curry (Scott Haze).
When a posse of men led by lawman Ketchum comes looking for Curry (and the money he was carrying), Henry’s got to decide who to trust. And after his homestead gets caught in the crossfire, Henry reveals he’s far more capable with a firearm than people may suspect…

‘Witness’ (1985)

Rounding out this list is “Witness,” Peter Weir’s Oscar-winning 1985 crime movie that sees hardened Philadelphia police detective John Book (Harrison Ford) assigned to protect an Amish mother, Rachel (Kelly McGillis), and her young son, Samuel (Lukas Haas).
The “witness” in this particular case is 8-year-old Samuel, who witnessed the brutal murder of an undercover cop at a train station. And when the killers inevitably set their sights on the family, Book goes undercover in Amish country to keep them safe until the investigation is over.
