Coronation Street's Tony Maudsley says 'this is true' as he reveals detail fans 'didn't know with famous link

Coronation Street star Tony Maudsley has confirmed a ‘true’ detail about himself, which revealed a surprise link to a very new Emmy winner. The actor is currently known for playing George Shuttleworth in the ITV soap, having made his debut on the cobbles back in 2020 as the son of Archie Shuttleworth, a local undertaker who ran Shuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street. He was later joined by his sister, Glenda, in Weatherfield and fans have recently seen George become single, with girlfriend Eileen Grimshaw having ditched the cobbles for a new life in Thailand following the death of her sister, Julie Carp. But before joining the cobbles, Tony had many roles – from Brookside to Benidorm, for which he is probably most famed for starring in as Kenneth Du Beke away from Corrie. However, taking to Instagram, it was a detail about his personal life that took some by surprise. Tony reshared a post which put a picture of him alongside Stephen Graham and Tricia Penrose with a caption which read: “3 kids from Kirkby, all at Ruffwood School at the same time!” In his own message, Tony typed: “This is true! When Stephen was in 1st year, Tricia was in 3rd year and I was in 5th year! My guess is the year we were all there together was 1983/84 #RuffwoodSchoolKirkby.” Corrie co-star Patti Clare, who plays Mary Taylor, was quick to respond, as she said: “Amazing! Something in the water?” before his followers also responded with their own messages. @jaki_o1 commented: “Love this Tony very talented people I still remember you tap dancing at break in school.” @pod_lisa999 wrote: “All bloody brilliant!!” @lesleyincity replied: “Well you learn something new every day. @tonymaudsley1 never knew you was a kirkby boy like my hubby @robinjeanx posted: “Oh wow, must be a cracking school to have produced 3 icons at the same time.” @lisacato71 shared: “No way, fellow scouser. Why did I not know this.” @bibbyl8 added: “Well ya learn something new everyday- Well done Kirkby.” It comes after Stephen picked up multiple Emmys at the recent Hollywood awards bash. The actor was recognised for his writing on Netflix‘s smash hit drama Adolescence , which he co-created with Jack Thorne, and starred in. The Netflix series, which follows a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a teenage girl, was praised for its portrayal of violence against women and its impact on communities. The series, which starts with the arrest of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, played by newcomer Owen Cooper, was quickly seen at the top of the most-watched programmes on the streaming website globally and prompted questions in Parliament following its release earlier this year. The limited series, starring Stephen as Jamie’s father, examines so-called incel culture, which has been blamed for misogyny online, and the use of social media in bullying. At the end of the 77th Emmy Awards on Sunday night (September 14), Stephen returned to the stage to claim his second statuette, this time in the category of Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. “This kind of thing doesn’t normally happen to a kid like me,” he said in his acceptance speech. “I’m just a mixed race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby, so for me, to be here today in front of my peers and to be acknowledged by you is the utmost humbling thing I could ever imagine in my life. And it shows you that any dream is possible.” He went on to thank his friends and family, without whom £none of this is possible,£ as well as his collaborators, Jack Thorne and Philip Barantini, both of whom also took home awards on the star-studded night.
