Thane’s long-cherished dream of a modern metro ride moved a step closer to reality on Monday, as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde flagged off the trial run of Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Kasarsvadavli) and 4A (Kasarsvadavli–Gaimukh).
The trial run was conducted on the stretch between Gaimukh and Vijay Garden, where the leaders themselves took a ride on the Metro train.
The project, spread across nearly 35 kilometers with 32 planned stations, aims to drastically improve connectivity between Thane, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and surrounding regions, easing the daily burden of road traffic.

The trains, built by BEML, are designed as six-coach sets similar to those already operational on Mumbai’s Metro Lines 2A and 7. They are equipped with modern features such as automated fire detection systems, obstacle detection, onboard emergency exits, and energy-efficient regenerative braking systems that promise to save up to 30 percent energy. Public announcement and passenger information systems are integrated into the coaches to ensure safety and convenience.

Monday’s trial included 10 stations along the route, including Cadbury Junction, Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Tikuji-ni-Wadi, Dongri Pada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavli, Gowniwada, and Gaimukh.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Fadnavis underlined the significance of the project for Thane’s growing population. “This Metro line is extremely important for Thane. Metro Line 4 is 32 kilometers long, while Line 4A adds another 2.88 kilometers, making a total of 35 kilometers with 32 stations. An investment of nearly Rs 16,000 crore is being made for this. Once operational, we expect a daily ridership of around 1.3 million passengers,” he said.
He also highlighted the depot being developed at Mogripada, spread over 45 hectares, which will cater to Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11, making it one of the largest facilities in the network. “With extensions, this will be the longest metro corridor in the country, at 58 kilometers, capable of carrying over 2.1 million commuters every day,” the Chief Minister added.

Fadnavis took a moment to credit his deputy, Eknath Shinde, for playing a key role in resolving land acquisition hurdles for the depot. “I must particularly acknowledge Deputy Chief Minister Shinde, who personally intervened to clear several obstacles and ensured land availability for the depot at Mogripada. Minister Pratap Sarnaik also put in significant efforts for this,” he said. Deputy CM Shinde, who represents Thane, received a warm round of applause from local leaders and residents for his role in pushing the project forward.
For Thane’s citizens, the Metro line promises not just convenience but also a transformation in daily life. With commuting times expected to reduce by 50 to 75 per cent and major relief from the city’s notorious traffic jams, residents are eagerly waiting for the line to open for public use.
Once fully operational, the Metro is expected to make travel to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Wadala, Bhandup, and Ghodbunder Road significantly smoother and faster. Until then, all eyes remain on the timeline for its commercial launch, as anticipation builds across the city.
