Northville High students host annual 5K to raise suicide prevention awareness

NORTHVILLE, Mich. – A student-led organization at Northville High School is continuing its mission to break the silence around mental health with its eighth annual 5K Suicide Prevention Run.
The school hosted the event, organized by the student group Color My World, late Sunday morning.
“Coming to an event like this and feeling so much support and so much community really shows me that none of us are alone,” said Keyya Dave, president of Color My World. “There’s people who care about everyone here and everyone in the Northville community.”
The organization emerged from tragedy eight years ago when a student founded it after losing a classmate to suicide.
Since then, it has evolved into a comprehensive mental health initiative within the school system.
Beyond the annual 5K, the Color My World club has funded suicide prevention training for teachers and coordinates various year-round activities to support student mental health
The school district has also implemented additional support services, including counselor availability and therapy dogs during lunch periods to help students manage stress.
“I know currently at Northville High School, there’s so much academic pressure, and just in our community, there’s a lot of pressure just to be perfect, almost,” Dave said. “Having an event like this reminds people that they’re not alone.”
The student organizers emphasize their generation’s commitment to addressing previously taboo subjects.
“We’re not scared to talk about things that might have been seen as taboo,” Dave explained. “That’s what saves lives, and that’s what makes everyone feel heard.”
