Tutoring grants: The Oklahoma State Department of Education announced Thursday that it will distribute $3 million in grants to support high-dosage tutoring programs.
The state’s two largest school districts, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, will each receive $1 million. The remaining $1 million will be divided into 100 $10,000 grants that will be available to rural districts with an enrollment of 5,000 or fewer pupils and where at least half of the students qualify for free or reduced price school meals.
TPS’ grant will be used to provide literacy and math tutoring for students in grades 1-8.
OSDE spokeswoman Madison Cercy did not answer questions about the grant’s funding source.
Community conversations: Skiatook Public Schools will host a community meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the high school auditorium, 1000 W. Fourth St.
Tulsa Public Schools will host a joint community meeting for Districts 1 and 5 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the cafeteria of Edison Preparatory Middle School, 2906 E. 41st St.
Schools in District 1 include Clinton West, Council Oak, Eugene Field, Robertson and Wayman Tisdale elementary schools and Webster Middle and High School.
Schools in District 5 include Eliot, Hoover, Lanier, Mayo Demonstration and Patrick Henry elementary schools and Edison Middle and High School.
TPS Ambassadors kickoff: Tulsa Public Schools will host a kickoff rally at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Wilson Teaching and Learning Academy, 2710 E. 11th St., for the district’s new volunteer initiative, One Team TPS Ambassadors.
Cafeteria accolade: Owasso Public Schools Director of Child Nutrition Jon Beckloff received the Spirit of Sodexho award, the company’s highest individual honor. Now in his third year with Owasso Public Schools, Beckloff was recognized for his emergency preparation efforts and endeavors as an area safety coordinator.
Speaking my languages: Tulsa Public Schools is accepting applications through Oct. 3 from multilingual sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in earning the Seal of Biliteracy on their diplomas. Applications are available online at tulsaschools.org/sealofbiliteracy.
To earn the seal, a student must demonstrate proficiency in at least two languages. Since 2018, TPS has awarded 680 Seals of Biliteracy for proficiency in more than a dozen languages, including Bangla, Dari, French, German, Spanish, Vietnamese, Yoruba and Zomi.
Nomination season: The Booker T. Washington High School Distinguished Hall of Fame Foundation is now accepting nominations for 2026 honorees through Oct. 24. Nomination forms are available online at tulsabtwdhof.org
Instructional shifts: Liberty and Sapulpa are not in session Monday.
Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences is not in session Thursday or Friday.
Friday is a distance-learning day for Bixby, College Bound Academy, Jenks and Prue.
School board calendar: The boards of education for Owasso and Tulsa are scheduled to meet Monday.
The Board of Education for Tulsa Classical Academy is scheduled to meet Tuesday.
The Oklahoma State Board of Education is scheduled to meet Thursday in Oklahoma City.
The Board of Education for Dove Charter Schools is scheduled to meet Saturday in Oklahoma City.
