George Zinn, a 71-year-old Utah man who falsely confessed to killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk during last week’s shooting at Utah Valley University, is now facing charges of felony for sexual exploitation of a minor.The Provo Police Department arrested Zinn last Wednesday after he loudly claimed responsibility for assassinating the 31-year-old right-wing activist, which, according to a Tuesday, September 17 statement from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, allowed “the actual suspect to flee and to hinder law enforcement.”Authorities said that shortly after the shooting, as people fled the scene, Zinn was seen yelling that he had shot Charlie Kirk. UVU Police took Zinn into custody and transported him to the UVU Police Department.He was not cooperativeThat statement also reveals that at that time, Zinn was not cooperative with law enforcement and did not want to speak with investigators, as per the police statement. “Zinn began to have a medical issue and was transported to a local hospital. While at the hospital, Zinn did freely state that he was not the shooter but yelled that he was to hinder law enforcement’s response,” he added.Once there, he agreed to speak with an FBI agent and a state official, to whom he admitted he was not the shooter but yelled that he should give the suspect time to flee the scene.Live EventsDuring the same interview, Zinn allowed agents to search his phone, at which point he allegedly admitted to viewing sexually explicit material involving children.What police found on his phoneZinn told the agents that he uses his phone to view and abuse child sexual abuse material, and there may be some images on his phone. Those agents did see several images on the phone of prepubescent girls scantily dressed.During a preliminary review of the phone, investigators saw more than 20 images of children aged 5 to 12 in various stages of undress and sexual posing. There were several very graphic sexual text threads in which Zinn shared the images with other parties. Zinn admitted to the investigators that he gets sexual gratification from viewing and sharing the images with others, and that his preferred victim age is 5 to 12 years old.What charges does he face?He is now facing four second-degree felonies for sexually exploiting a minor. He has also been charged with obstruction of justice for claiming to have killed Kirk while the real gunman is believed to be 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who is now in custody. Authorities have not released any information indicating a link between Robinson and Zinn.According to public radio station KPCW, Zinn is well-known locally as a provocateur who has disrupted high-profile events such as the Sundance Film Festival.What people are saying about himReactions online to George Zinn’s arrest have been swift and sharply critical.
