The upcoming documentary In Whose Name? captures a raw and emotional exchange between Kim Kardashian and her former husband, Kanye West, providing unprecedented insight into the complexities of their relationship over the years.
Filmed with West’s full cooperation across six years, the documentary explores the rapper’s mental state, controversial public behaviour and personal struggles, while highlighting moments of confrontation with those closest to him.
The documentary revisits a pivotal moment following West’s 2018 visit to the White House, where he met with Donald Trump. West, whose career later faced turbulence due to public controversies including antisemitic remarks and financial losses, is shown having a tense phone conversation with Kardashian regarding his reputation and how he is perceived by people in his professional and personal circles.
In the footage, Kardashian expresses her distress. She tells West, “I can’t sleep. I’ve been crying all day. It’s just this bad dream that’s not ending.” She attempts to guide him towards self-awareness, adding, “You’re losing, everyone around you is like…there’s a way to talk about what you feel. But when you’re this dramatic…”
Kanye West challenges her statement, questioning, “Who ‘everyone’?” to which Kardashian responds, pointing to “people in the music business” and those “in your work field.”
Kanye West Confronts Career And Personal Struggles
During the call, West explains his perspective on the music industry and his work, stating, “I don’t care about the music business. I don’t care about the work field. I’m in a slave business. I’m a slave to Universal. What are you talking about? Of course they’re losing.”
Kardashian counters thoughtfully, saying, “Just ’cause you have a job and you work hard doesn’t mean you’re a slave. That’s demeaning because I work hard with brands that are similar to all of that.”
West continues, insisting, “E! is a slaveship for you.” Kardashian calmly responds, emphasising gratitude and perspective. She says, “That’s not how I look at it, so I think you’re offending a lot of people, including yourself, because they’ve provided a life for me that I never would have been able to provide, and I’m very grateful for that. And I’m not about burning bridges with companies.”
The conversation escalates, with Kardashian warning, “You’re gonna wake up one day and you’re gonna have, like, nothing,” prompting West to sharply respond, “No! Never tell me I’m gonna wake up one day and have nothing. Never put that into the universe.”
Confrontation With Kris Jenner
The documentary further highlights tension between West and Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner, as another verbal altercation unfolds after the phone call.
Timeline Of Kardashian And West’s Relationship
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West began dating in 2012, tied the knot in 2014, and officially filed for divorce in 2021. The couple shares four children: North, 12; Saint, 9; Chicago, 7 and Psalm, 6.
West’s public support for Donald Trump began in November 2016, when he voiced his opinion during a concert, although he later admitted he did not vote in that election. In April 2018, he famously called Trump “my brother” and received backlash for a pro-Trump rant during a Saturday Night Live appearance that did not air. Later that year, West met Trump in the Oval Office in October. By July 2020, he announced his own presidential bid, ultimately conceding in November of that year.
In Whose Name? Offers Unprecedented Access
Director Nico Ballesteros filmed over 3,000 hours of personal footage with West’s consent, providing viewers with an unfiltered look into the rapper’s mindset during these turbulent years. The documentary combines intimate moments, heated exchanges and personal reflections, offering insight into West’s life beyond the headlines. It also highlights the strain on his relationships with those closest to him, including members of the Kardashian and Jenner families.
