A gripping new limited thriller series has taken Netflix by storm, with viewers praising the series as ‘jaw-dropping’ and nothing short of a ‘captivating masterpiece.’ The Dead Girls, known in Spanish as Las Muertas, premiered worldwide on September 10 and has already left audiences stunned. The six-part crime drama is adapted from Jorge Ibargüengoitia’s acclaimed novel and draws inspiration from the chilling true story of Las Poquianchis, a family of serial killers who terrorised Mexico in the 1960s. Set in rural Mexico, the series follows the lives of sisters Arcángela and Serafina Baladro, whose seemingly ordinary lives hide a dark secret. What begins as a business plan transforming a local bar into a brothel, quickly turns into a reign of terror. The Baladro sisters manipulate young women into sex work and bribe the authorities to look the other way as they expand their grip on their thriving underworld empire. But their empire soon falls, when the sex workers begin to die in a series of freak accidents, causing the sisters to look for help. They pressure Serafina’s toxic lover Simón to help cover up the deaths and dispose of the bodies. However, the weight of their crimes soon overwhelms Simón, who tries to break free – only to ignite Serafina’s rage. Consumed by jealousy and obsession, she decides that if she can’t have him, no one will. Before long, word of the sisters’ violence and corruption reaches the police, who can no longer turn a blind eye to their recklessness and brutality. The investigation that follows uncovers horrors that shock the nation and cements the Baladro sisters as two of the most infamous women in Mexican history. The series boosts an impressive 100% rating on the review website Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers branding it as ‘captivating.’ On the review site, one viewer stated: “The Dead Girls is just captivating. One of the best series of our decadent society. The acting of both main characters a master class… it was a tour for the levels of hell.” Additionally viewers have taken to X, formally known as Twitter, to express their opinion on The Good Girls.
