On Sunday, September 21, A’ja Wilson was named the WNBA MVP. Shortly after the announcement was made, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James took to Instagram to share a message of congratulations with Wilson.
“4 piece chicken nugget!!!!,” James posted to his Instagram story.
Wilson’s MVP award marked the fourth time in her career that she’s been voted as the most valuable player in the WNBA. Wilson had a stellar season for the Las Vegas Aces. In 40 outings, she averaged 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists, shooting 50.5% from the field and 42.4% from three-point range.
As reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, Wilson’s latest award sets a new record in the WNBA.
“Breaking: Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has won the 2025 WNBA MVP award, becoming the first player in league history to win the honor four times, sources tell ESPN,” Charania wrote on X.
Wilson, 29, is still young enough to win another MVP award, which would put her in the conversation with NBA legends such as Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
LeBron James Breaks Silence on Future Retirement
While Wilson is still young enough to continue stacking accolades, James is firmly in the final stages of his career. The veteran superstar will turn 41 during the upcoming season and is in the final year of his current contract after opting into his $52.6 million player option.
During a recent interview with “Complex,” James talked about his future and his thoughts on retirement.
“I‘m not hinting at anything,” James said. “Obviously, I know I’m on the other side of the hump, for sure. Come on now, I’m not about to play another 23 years, that’s for damn sure, and I’m not about to play another 10. I’m definitely gearing up to where the end is, I’m not there yet.”
Last season, James was still among the most impactful players in the NBA. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists, shooting 51.3% from the field and 37.6% from deep. Now, with Luka Doncic also in Los Angeles, the veteran forward could have an opportunity to add a fifth championship to his resume.
Lakers’ LeBron James Not Concerned By Age
Given his still-elite production, it doesn’t appear that James is paying much attention to his age. In a recent interview for “CGTN Sports Scene,” James sought to dispel concerns about his age.
“Nah, age doesn’t matter,” James said. “Age is just a number for sure. I definitely feel, you know, energetic. You know, anytime I’m out there on the floor trying to give everything I got to my teammates, you know, it’s about that win.”
If James can continue playing at the level we saw last season, he can choose when to step away from the NBA. It’s clear that he’s still an elite decision-maker, scorer and playmaker. And while we’ve undoubtedly seen some slippage on the defensive end, when he locks in, he’s still a force as both a point-of-attack and help defender.
James will have a decision to make regarding his future next summer. But for now, his focus will be on contending for a championship. How things play out in the coming season could have a legitimate impact on whether this is his last season. Unfortunately, we will just have to wait and see.
