Eat Tuna Poke Recalled Over Listeria Risk

A ready-to-eat seafood product from Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand is being recalled due to a potential contamination risk.
Annasea Foods Group, the company that supplied the product, recalled more than 3,000 pounds of the Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke, according to a notice published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Sept. 20.
The product was recalled due to potential contamination with listeria and was sold in the deli section across more than 30 states nationwide.
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of disease-causing bacteria that can cause serious illness if ingested, especially for certain vulnerable groups of people like the elderly and those who are immunocompromised.
To date, there have been no illnesses reported in connection to the recall and the company is working with the FDA to find the root cause of the reported contamination.
Costco’s Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke recall comes days after Costco issued a product safety notice and recalled bottles of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco due to “a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use.”

What Is Listeria?
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria found in animals, rotting vegetation, sewage, soil and water that can cause disease, per the FDA. It thrives in unsanitary food production conditions, which can lead to the food becoming contaminated.
Individuals who consume the contaminated food can develop listeriosis. Symptoms of listeriosis range in severity, with less severe symptoms including diarrhea, fever, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting. More severe symptoms can range from confusion, convulsions, headache, loss of balance or stiff neck.
Listeriosis can be life-threatening in some cases, especially for adults over the age of 65, newborns and individuals with weakened immune systems.
