Three male councillors of Sivakasi Corporation booked for criminal intimidation, harassment of woman

After over five months of receiving a complaint from a woman councillor, V. S. Srinika, the Sivakasi Town police on Wednesday registered a case of criminal intimidation and harassment of woman against three male councillors of Sivakasi Corporation.

Ms. Srinika alleged that the police kept finding excuses for not registering the case after she lodged a complaint in March 2025 against DMK councillors L. Jainulabdeen (ward 37) and M. Saravanakumar (ward 22) and MDMK councillor S. Rajesh (ward 39).

Srinika is one of the nine councillors, who won on AIADMK ticket but joined the DMK after election. Eventually, she became the Chairperson, Standing Committee on Education of Sivakasi Corporation.

She complained that when she repeatedly raised questions to the Mayor, I. Sangeetha, during the Corporation council meeting held on March 18, 2025, Jainulabdeen kept interrupting her.

Later, she alleged that the accused councillor pushed a bench from behind. Even as she questioned him, the other two councillors reportedly rushed towards her and threatened her before other councillors intervened.

“I have visited the Sivakasi Town police station for enquiry at least six times, but those accused by me do not turn up. The police offered this as an excuse and did not bother to register the first information report,” she complained.

Meanwhile, Jainulabdeen filed a counter case against Srinika for using abusive words and for criminal intimidation.

“Even for that complaint, only I turned up at the police station and Jainulabdeen did not come to the station for enquiry,” she complained.

Later, Srinika had escalated the issue with the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) and State Human Rights Commission.

“Then, I gave the police an ultimatum and said that I will not go for a compromise with the three councillors and warned the police that I will take the issue up with the National Commission for Women,” Srinika said.

The police registered the FIR on Wednesday accusing the three councillors of using abusive language, criminal intimidation and under the provisions of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act.

The police also registered FIR in the complaint lodged by Jainulabdeen against Srinika.
