A black bear was filmed wandering through the aisles of a Dollar General store in New Jersey and bit an elderly woman before being put down.

The female predator strutted confidently through the store in Vernon, New Jersey, around 4pm Tuesday afternoon.

It was acting strangely and lunged towards people and pets, sparking concerns the animal was sick.

Locals managed to lure the bear out of the store. Police then tried to shoo it back into the woods with rubber bullets – but it kept returning.

Christine Flohr, who works next door and watched the animal die, told CBS New York that her heart sank: ‘I’m tearing up now thinking about it.

‘I asked the cop – was that just a tranquilizer or did you have to shoot him? And he said, we had to shoot him.

‘I just started crying.’

In the three-minute clip, the bear was seen slowly approaching the camera as Sean F. Clarkin, who captured the video, uttered, ‘This is not good.’

The bear inched closer – seemingly unperturbed – and started following the Vernon real estate agent.

Horrified onlookers wereheard in the background as Clarkin tried guiding the bear out of the store.

The animal was seen walking past bottles of Ajax dish soap, bags of chips and the frozen food section.

‘What’s up, buddy? You are one big, nasty motherf—-r,’ Clarkin said.

The bear had already bit a 90-year-old woman in the leg. She was taken to the hospital.

It had also attacked a local’s German Shepherd dog.

‘This way, this way,’ Clarkin told the bear. ‘Keep coming.’

The bear appeared to be listening to the real estate agent, who was desperately looking for the exit to remove the bear from the store.

‘Where the f–k is the door?’ Clarkin yelled out.

The bear stayed unbothered as it made its way towards the front of the Dollar General location.

After guiding the bear out, Clarkin tried leading the animal to liberty: ‘Freedom, buddy, freedom. Go rock and roll. Go, go, go!’

The bear’s demeanor appeared to change moments later, but the footage was unclear.

Clarkin started yelling: ‘Get away! Get the f–k away! Move! Walk away!

‘The bear is hungry! The bear is definitely hungry!’

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Fish and Wildlife is investigating the incident.

Clarkin later posted that the ‘real story’ behind his sensational video was not actually the giant bear.

He wrote: ‘After years – even decades – of the municipality allowing restaurant and business dumpsters to remain open and unsecured, we’re now witnessing the consequences.

‘When bears have easy access to human food, their population grows rapidly. This leads to the annual bear hunt, during which bears of all ages and sizes are slaughtered – often unnecessarily.

‘If we reduce access to dumpster food, we will see a natural decline in bear populations, and in turn, less need for these annual hunts.
